From
TUNDE OMOLEHIN, Sokoto
The
Sharia Court of Appeal in Sokoto is to decide whether the wrists of two
men convicted for stealing N10,000, should be amputated. An Upper Sharia
Court in the state had earlier ordered the amputation of the wrists of the men
in a judgment delivered on 2010 for the offence.
In
his submission at the Appeal Court, the counsel to the accused, Abdulhamid
Zubairu, on Tuesday presented 15 grounds on which the appellate court should
dismiss the earlier verdict.
However,
the prosecution counsel, Ibrahim Shinaka, told the court that the hands of the
accused should be amputated as the Upper Sharia Court followed Islamic law and
principles in delivering its judgment.
In
his ruling, the presiding judge, Qadi Tambari, adjourned the case until
February 17 for further hearing
