A 32-year-old man, Akodogbo Doheton, on Tuesday appeared before
an Apapa Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, charged with indecent assault on a
seven-year-old girl.
Doheton, who resides in Awadagbe, Ajara, Badagry, in Lagos
State, is facing two counts of sexual assault by penetration and sexual
assault.
The prosecutor, SP. Soji Ojaokomo, told the court that the
accused committed the offences on May 23 at his residence.
Ojaokomo said that the accused lured the girl into his
apartment and sexually assaulted her by inserting his fingers into her.
He alleged that Doheton sexually assaulted the girl
without her consent.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Sections
259 and 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 259
stipulates that any person found guilty of sexual assault by penetration with a
child, is liable to imprisonment for life, while Section 261 prescribes
a-three-year sentence for sexual assault.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Oluyemisi Adelaja, granted the
accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case to July 10, for mention.
