SAPELE— The Police in Yenagoa has declared a 33-year-old
man, Ebiapadei Gariki, wanted over alleged murder of his creditor, one Peter
Akpojemraye Onuoghujuovwo, aged 24 years, to escape paying a debt of N1.3
million. The incident happened in Aghoro community, Bayelsa State.
Ebiapadei Gariki, now at large, reportedly killed his
benefactor in order to escape paying back the money he allegedly borrowed from
the deceased, but luck ran out of him when a friend of the victim, who
accompanied him to demand the repayment of the debt managed to escape and
reported the incident to the victim’s family, who in turn called the Police.
A family source said the victim, who hailed from Aladja, Udu
Local Government Area of Delta State and traded in sawn timber, gave the N1.3
million to the suspect to supply him timber.
When the supply was not forthcoming, the victim decided to
go after the debtor in Aghoro community, in Bayelsa State to demand his money
or the supply.
The source further said that upon getting to Aghoro
community, there was a heated argument between the victim and the suspect which
resulted in fisticuffs.
Two days later, the victim and his friends were in a boat
along a nearby creek when they saw the suspect pulling behind them. The suspect
later overtook them, blocked their boat and shot the victim at close range.
In the process, his friend escaped and was able to find his
way back to Aladja and informed the victim’s family.
A senior Police officer attached to the Bayelsa State Police
Command confirmed the incident, saying the suspect would be apprehended and
brought to book.
