The Other Woman

The Other Woman

Ibukun stood firm crying her eyes out beside his grave
Wailing, covering her face with her scanty shawl trying to be brave
He had promised her marriage but as a second wife
His death has pierced her heart, like a dismantled knife

He was to mark his 52 year birthday this December
Ibukun was only 21 but true love knows no number
They were three decades apart
But true love crossed their ecstasy path

22 Road Festac Town

We walked in-between closes on barefoot
Rolling tyres and flying kites
Building friendship, grooming brothers
On empty pockets with no hopes
I am still that Festac boy
Shaking hands and mending fences

WEATHERED A YEAR

Can it be we have weathered a year?
The misgivings we had disappear
In the light of past days
and your warm gentle ways
all this time, and you're even dearer.

BRokEN...a poem by Kelvin Alaneme

A group were holding up his posters, chanting support
I examined them in amusement
Frail-looking old women
Young, jobless men
Hoarse voices and rumbling stomachs
My face fell as I saw Okoro

The shame and the memories came flooding in
Of feeling bloated and having strange cravings
Of innumerable ultrasound scans saying the same thing
Of countless beatings from my step-mother and name-calling
Of the race from the abortionist's table
Of seven months of loneliness and eventual loss

I looked at the man and then at Okoro
'Evil people!' I stopped short of screaming
I was a naive damsel, eyes filled with laughter
Okoro showered me with gifts and attention
He said I was his angel and it sounded funny
After months of wooing, I went to his house

Once inside, he bolted the door
I sat a safe distance from him
After drinking the juice he served me, I felt woozy
I woke up on his bed, feeling sore
I looked for something, anything, to cover my nakedness
There was blood on the sheets

BROKEN.

He came bearing gifts

Spinning rhetorics with his plastic smile

I stood in the midday sun

Apathy and fatigue etched in my face

The man in white agbada was talking

His litany of promises made me sick

Lies Ladies Tell.

Women are so mysterious, most times enigmatic. They have more layers than an onion, and no man, not even the very wise King Solomon was able to figure them out. Women are just confusing by default. Though many of them strive to be honest, truthful, and forthright; truth is they do not always tell the truth. Don’t get me wrong, men tell lies too, but most of the time, women tell the bigger lies, especially when in a relationship, trying to lock down a relationship, or trying to get out of one. These lies ranges from white lies, half-truths told to keep the peace, or sometimes just a lie of the highest proportion. Like I said, guys lie too. And maybe some of my female readers will decide to be awesome and tell us the lies men tell from their own perspective.
