Welding is a fabrication or sculptural process that joins materials, usually metals or thermoplastics, by causing coalescence. This is often done by melting the workpieces and adding a filler material to form a pool of molten material (the weld pool) that cools to become a strong joint, with pressure sometimes used in conjunction with heat, or by itself, to produce the weld. This is in contrast with soldering and brazing, which involve melting a lower-melting-point material between the workpieces to form a bond between them, without melting the workpieces.

Many different energy
sources can be used for welding, including a gas flame, an electric arc, a
laser, an electron beam, friction, and ultrasound. While often an industrial
process, welding may be performed in many different environments, including
open air, under water and in outer space. Welding is a potentially hazardous
undertaking and precautions are required to avoid burns, electric shock, vision
damage, inhalation of poisonous gases and fumes, and exposure to intense
ultraviolet radiation. To get the best knowledge about the science of welding
you have to attend a qualified welding institute and there a lot of them abroad
, but in Nigeria the best you can get is at Gateway Industrial and Petro-Gas
Institute, oni Ogun state (GIPI), with the inception of this veritable
institute since 2008, the institute has churned out competent and
professionally trained personel for the oil and gas industries in Nigeria and
beyond.Gateway Industrial & Petro-Gas Institute, Oni, Ogun State was
established by the Ogun State Government vide OGHA Act No. 9 of 2008 to provide
the much needed skills required in the industries, both in Nigeria and
Overseas. Hence, GIPI adopted the tripodal approach to fulfill its mandate of
running:
(1) NBTE accredited ND Innovation program (2) Accredited Professional program and (3) In-House Training for Industries.
The Institute is situated in a 100Ha piece of land in a serene environment conducive for academic activities with Hostel accommodation for its students/trainees.
